What is Delta-9 THC

  • WHAT IS DELTA 9 THC?
    • Delta-9 THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis. It's responsible for the "high" that people experience when consuming cannabis products.

  • Psychoactive Effects
    • Delta-9 THC is the most well-known cannabinoid for its ability to produce intoxication. The intensity of these effects depends on the dosage, the person's tolerance, and the method of consumption (smoking, edibles, beverages, etc).

  • Legal Status
    • The legal status of Delta-9 THC varies widely. In the U.S., Delta-9 THC derived from marijuana is federally illegal, but legal in many states for medicinal or recreational use. However, Delta-9 THC derived from hemp (containing less than 0.3% THC by dry weight) is federally legal under the 2018 U.S. Farm Bill.

  • Comparison with Other Cannabinoids
    • Delta-9 THC is often compared to other forms of THC like delta-8 THC, which is a less potent, naturally occurring cannabinoid with milder effects. Delta-9 is also distinct from CBD (cannibidiol), which is non-psychoactive and more commonly used for therapeutic purposes without inducing a high.

CAN YOU PROVIDE MORE DETAILS AROUND THE 2018 U.S. FARM BILL THAT MADE DELTA-9 LEGAL?

The 2018 U.S. Farm Bill, officially known as the agricultural improvement act of 2018, had significant impact on the legal status of hemp and it's derivatives, including Delta-9 THC. Here are the key points of the bill, with a focus on how it indrectly legalized Delta-9 THC in products like beverages:

Legalization of Hemp

The bill removed hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight) from the Controlled Substances Act. This distinction between hemp and marijuana meant that hemp and it's derivatives (like CBD and Delta-9 THC) became federally legal.

Delta-9 THC Threshold

Delta-9 THC, the psychoactive component in cannbis, remains illegal at the federal level in amounts greater than 0.3%. However, hemp-derived products, including Delta-9 THC, are legal as long as the total Delta-9 THC concentration does not exceed 0.3% on a dry weight basis.

Interstate Commerce

The bill allowed for the transportation of hemp-derived products across state lines, even to states that may have stricter cannabis laws, as long as the products met the federal definition of hemp. This provision enables widespread distribution of hemp-derived Delta-9 products, including beverages.

WHAT ARE DELTA-9 THC BEVERAGES?

Delta-9 THC beverages are drinks infused with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9 THC), the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis. These beverages are designed to offer the effects of THC, such as relaxation or euphoria, without the need for smoking or vaping. They can come in various forms, including seltzers, teas, sodas and even alcohol alternatives.

How does Delta-9 THC beverages work?

Delta-9 THC beverages are typically created by emulsifying THC into a liquid, making it more easily absorbed by the body when consumed. The effects are usually felt within 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the person's metabolism and the specific beverage consumed.

Difference Between Delta-9 THC from Delta-8 and CBD Beverages

Unlike Delta-8 THC, which is a milder, less psychoactive (and in some cases include some non-natural modifications) form of THC, Delta-9 THC is stronger and provides a more potent "high". Additionally, Delta-9 THC beverages are different from CBD drinks (that do not have THC), which contain cannabidio (CBD), a non-psychoactive compound from cannabis that doesn't cause intoxication.
